PART TWO
Chapter 1
Julia bumps into Winston in the hallway at work the next day, and passeshim a secret note telling him that she loves him. Winston wonders if itis a trap but decides that it is not. He keeps busy with group activitiesto try and take his mind off it. They manage to talk at lunch the next dayand make arrangements to see each other the next weekend.
Chapter 2
They both travel out into the countryside by different routes to meet.They talk and make love. Julia tells Winston that she has done this beforewith many men.
Chapter3
Julia and Winston arrange to meet again. When they do, they carry ona furtive conversation. From then on they both try to spend time together,but are unable to arrange many meetings because both carry out so many communityactivities. When they do meet they talk about Winston's wife, and how theparty's policies of sexual privation encourage political fervour and leaderworship.
Chapter 4
Winston and Julia rent the room over the junk shop and begin to meetthere.
Chapter 5
Winston goes into work and Syme has been vapourized. (That is arrestedor killed by the thought police and had all trace of his existence destroyed.)In the run up to hate week Winston is given more work to do. Winston andJulia talk about taking action against the party by joining a secret resistancegroup called the Brotherhood, which Winston beleives O'Brien is connectedto.
Chapter 6
O'Brien seeks out Winston and arranges for him to visit him at home.Winston beleives this is a signal that he is on their side and wants toget Julia and himself involved in the Brotherhood.
Chapter 7
Winston remembers more about his childhood including the fact that hestole food from his mother and sister to stay alive, leading them to starveto death. Winston and Julia swear to stay loyal to each other no matterwhat.
Chapter 8
Julia and Winston go to O'Brien's house and talk to him about the Brotherhood.They are then recruited into the Brotherhood and O'Brien arranges to havea copy of an illegal political text by which the movement operates sentto them at a later date.
Chapter 9
During the middle of hate week, the enemy suddenly changes, so that Oceaniais at war not with Eastasia and not Eurasia as previously. This generatesa lot of extra work for Winston's dept. going back through texts and makingit appear that Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia, not Eurasia.After the rush, Winston and Julia meet up again at the flat again and readthe book that O'Brien has sent them. This book explains the political workingsof Oceania and the Party. Whilst reading it both Winston and Julia fallasleep.
Chapter 10
They wake up to find that they have overslept by six hours. A voice emmergesfrom behind the painting on the wall, and they realise that it is the thoughtpolice, who have been watching them all the time through a hidden camera.Winston and Julia are then arrested and split up by the thought police,of whom the junk shop owner is a member.
